Asterfold for iPhone and iPad has no account, advertising, analytics or tracking. This policy also covers this website.
Stored on your device
- The place you choose (town name, rounded coordinates and time zone) and places you keep in the list.
- Viewpoints you save: name, exact coordinates, the direction you face, field of view and your notes.
- Session plans: date, light window, composition, gear, reminder and checklist.
- Your Field Journal: check-ins (with the forecast saved before each event), field notes, colours, clouds, notes and, only if you choose, a kept photo.
- What you like to catch, alert settings and sound preference; your Sky Log.
- The latest cloud forecast for your place, and a small snapshot for the Home Screen widget.
We don't receive these records. They may be included in device backups according to your Apple settings, except kept journal photos, which are excluded from backups and stored with iOS complete file protection.
Location
If you tap “Use my location”, iOS asks for permission once. For Tonight, your position is used on the device to find the nearest town and time zone, then rounded to about 1 km. When you save a viewpoint where you stand, its exact coordinates are stored on your device only, so alignments and times are precise. Exact positions are never sent anywhere. You can always search for a town or type coordinates instead.
Photos
Photos are chosen with Apple's photo picker, so Asterfold never gets access to your whole library. A photo used for a check-in is read for colour at low resolution on your device and discarded. If you choose to keep a photo in the journal, a resized copy is stored in the app's private storage, never uploaded, and deleted when you delete the entry or all your data.
Cloud forecast
To show cloud, rain and fog, the app requests a forecast from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (api.met.no) using your place's coordinates rounded to two decimals (about 1 km). The request contains no identifier, account or personal data beyond that location and standard network information such as IP address, which MET Norway processes under its own privacy policy. The website's “Rate my sky” checker makes the same kind of request from your browser.
Notifications
Golden hour reminders, session plan reminders and smart alerts are scheduled locally on your device after you turn them on and grant permission. Nothing is sent from a server.
Purchases
Apple processes Asterfold Plus subscriptions and purchases through StoreKit. We don't receive your payment details or Apple ID password. See Apple's privacy policy.
Deleting your data
You can delete any journal entry, viewpoint or plan individually. Settings → Delete all my data removes your place, viewpoints, plans, journal entries and kept photos, preferences, Sky Log, cached forecast and widget snapshot from the device. Deleting the app does the same. It doesn't cancel a subscription; manage that in your Apple Account settings.
